Expressions and idioms with avoir:
Expressions with avoir are even more important than those with être. This is one of the areas that often confuses French learners.
In English, many common expressions use the verb to be. However, in French, these same ideas are often expressed with the verb avoir (to have) instead.
For example, English speakers say “I am hungry” or “She is cold,” whereas in French these expressions are “J’ai faim” (I have hunger) and “Elle a froid” (She has cold).
