IRREGULAR ‘IR’ VERB

Irregular ‘ir’ verbs in French follow a pattern of conjugation that is different from that of regular ‘ir’ verbs. Verbs such as ‘Finir’ (to finish) are conjugated by simply removing the ‘ir’ followed by the last alphabet in the root. This is done only in case of je, tu, il ,elle ,on,nous,vous,ils or elles as demonstrated below:

The ‘ir’ verbs take the following endings in their conjugated form:

  • Je ( J’)– is                                                                                                            
  • Tu – is
  • Il/Elle/on – it
  • Nous – issons
  • Vous – issez
  • Ils/Elles – issent

Ex : Le cours finit à onze heures.   (The lesson finishes at eleven o’clock.)

Je finis mes devoirs.   (I ‘m finishing my homework.)

(ii). Fuir :  Flee   (The  ‘i’ becomes ‘y’ with nous and vous:)

(iii). mourir  : die ( has two radicals:)

(iv). tenir (to hold ) , venir ( to come ) and their derivatives (e.g appartenir,revenir) have three radicals:

Verbs in OIR

(i). Verb in -voir (apart from avoir): the  ‘i’ becomes ‘y’ with nous and vous

Ex: Voir:

(ii).Verbs in -cevoir: note the ‘ç’ before the ‘o’ , and note the difference between them and verbs in – voir

(iii). Savoir and valoir have two radicals : one for the singular and one for the plural.
